A Tanzanian IT-expert joins our school network

Mr. Elikana Ngogo, a Tanzanian information technology specialist currently living and working in Finland, has joined our school network and is eager to assist Haukipudas High School with our efforts to send used computers to our friendship school in Tanzania. Mr. Ngogo is one of the founders of the association called “Computerized Society”, the goal of which is to collect used computers from different parts of the world, and send them to young students in Tanzania, Africa. Mr Ngogo's goal is to make Tanzanian students literate users of information and communication technologies, but as Tanzania depends on imported IT-technology, they have to turn to countries which are advanced in their production and application of technology. The majority of Tanzanian schools also depend on second hand technology as new equipment is too expensive to afford. (//es.joensuu.fi/pub/Theses/2008_MSc_Ngogo_Elikana_Obadia.pdf)

Mr. Ngogo found out about our school’s Tanzania project accidentally through our website last spring. He contacted us right away, and we set up a meeting for the summer. In our meeting we decided to work hard together for our common goal to find available used computers, to organize their shipping, and finally to provide our friendship school with computers and the necessary expertise that is needed in order to be able to use the computers efficiently. Our goal is to send the computers to Mkapa High School during the school year 2008-2009.

Mr. Ngogo will visit our friendship school in Dar-es-Salaam in November. He will also contact the local Rotary Club which, together with the Rotary Club in Finland, might be able to help us with our project.

According to my knowledge, this is the second significant improvement in this project already, being at least as important as last year's third year students' farewell gift when considering long-term effects. The delivering of computers hopefully provides Tanzanian people with access to the internet and thus to an infinite amount of knowlegde. That is, if they choose to use it wisely instead of explicitly abusing it much like the majority of the western world did.

I am glad to be part of an operation like this. And I think it is good thing that we send our old and useless computers to people who do not have too many of their own.

It’s great that an IT-expert joins to our school network and is eager to assist our school to send old computers to Tanzania. Haukipudas high school has a lot of these old computers that are too slow for proper use. I think it’s better to send these old computers to people who need them instead of trashing them. That is what I call recycling.

Old computers are special waste and if people do not recycle them, computers are taken to landfill. Because of that it is great invention to collect old computers and bring them to place they are needed to!

It's awesome that those who have the opportunity to help, really do what they can to provide poorer schools with equal equipment to learn. I think we should inform more schools about this project, they might be interested as well.
Way to go, Finland!

This is a great way of recycling. At the same time we are saving money because instead of buying new computers and sending them to Africa we give the Africans used computers. It is awesome that our school is involved in this project :)
